Knicks waive Bruce Brown. Keeping James Wiseman is a different bet, not a straight upgrade.

Evidence check for the Knicks' October 17 roster decision: Knicks PR confirms Bruce Brown was waived; ESPN sources report James Wiseman stays. The report is not an official minutes or rotation guarantee.
Original evidence-status explainer. Brown's waiver: Knicks PR, October 17. Wiseman staying: ESPN's Shams Charania report, October 17. Checked October 17, 2026. No playing-time guarantee is implied.

The Knicks waived Bruce Brown on Saturday, the team's public-relations account announced. ESPN, citing Shams Charania's sources, reports that James Wiseman will remain for the regular-season opener. New York is choosing another center option over keeping Brown. That does not establish that Wiseman is the better player in every lineup or matchup.

A choice, not a rule forcing one player out

The payroll distinction matters. ESPN's Bobby Marks says the Knicks could have kept both players, but were only $3.2 million below their self-imposed hard cap at the second apron. Calling this a league rule that required Brown's departure would misstate that reporting. The club's roster construction and spending limit belong in the explanation together; neither is a substitute for evaluating the basketball cost.

Wiseman offers another center alongside Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond, according to ESPN. His 18 points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes against Toronto on October 13 supplied a concrete preseason performance to assess. They were exhibition numbers, not evidence that a regular-season rotation problem has already been solved. Retaining a player creates an option. It does not guarantee useful minutes when the games count.

The strongest case for Brown still matters

The fair objection is that Brown brings a different body of work. In its September signing announcement, New York noted his place on Denver's 2023 championship team and his 82 appearances for the Nuggets last season. Those are reasons to take his departure seriously, not to dismiss him as an expendable camp name. There is a real opportunity cost whenever a club gives up an experienced perimeter option to retain size.

Both players signed Exhibit 9 contracts on September 16, according to the Knicks' separate announcements. Saturday's decision ends Brown's current stint, but the records reviewed do not settle his next team, a possible return or Wiseman's eventual workload. Our read: the center-depth argument is understandable. Its value will be judged against the flexibility New York loses without Brown, not by treating one productive preseason night as a verdict on the choice.
