After the Final · ALCS
Rays 7, Guardians 3. A three-run seventh makes the ALCS level again.
October 17, 2026 · Final
Tampa Bay beat Cleveland 7-3 on Saturday to tie the American League Championship Series at two games apiece. The Rays scored three times in the seventh inning, then received a two-run Yandy Diaz homer in the ninth after Cleveland had cut the lead to two. MLB's official game record is Final, not an in-progress score.
The series is now a race to two more wins. That is a different position from a 3-1 Cleveland lead, which would have left Tampa Bay with no remaining room for a loss. Saturday did not put the Rays in the World Series. It restored the same margin for error to both teams.
A hit, an error and another run
Junior Caminero's sixth-inning double broke a 1-1 tie and scored Jonathan Aranda. In the seventh, Richie Palacios and Taylor Walls singled before Aranda's hit brought both runners home on a play that also included a Chase DeLauter fielding error. Aranda reached third. The official record credits one RBI on that play, not two.
Chandler Simpson then drove Aranda home with a sacrifice fly. The Rays had turned a one-run lead into a 5-1 advantage. The distinction between the hit and the error belongs in the account: two runners scored, but that does not mean the hitter receives two RBIs. Cleveland finished with two errors; Tampa Bay had none.
The seventh was the game's largest scoring inning for either side. It gave the Rays room they would soon need. A four-run lead can look comfortable in a final linescore, but Cleveland immediately made it less so.
Cleveland answered. Diaz answered back.
Travis Bazzana homered in the bottom of the seventh. Brayan Rocchio's single later in the inning scored Patrick Bailey and brought the Guardians within 5-3. That response is the strongest counterpoint to a story of Tampa Bay cruising. The Guardians had produced two runs before the inning ended and still had time to change the game.
Diaz supplied the separation in the ninth. Palacios singled, and Diaz followed with a two-run homer to right. Tampa Bay finished with 11 hits to Cleveland's eight. Our read: the Rays won the inning that expanded the lead and the swing that rebuilt it. Cleveland's answer was real; it was not the last answer.
Game 5 is listed for Sunday, October 18, at 5:08 p.m. Eastern in Cleveland. MLB's schedule retains a postponed entry and a separate scheduled makeup entry for game 849817. The scheduled Sunday entry is the relevant one. Check the club's ticket instructions and current viewing access before making plans. Two wins apiece is the series position, not a prediction of the remaining results.
