Tyler Ulrich, a 21-year-old Southern Nazarene safety, has died. The university's athletics department announced his death Thursday, October 15, expressing support for his family, friends and teammates.
Ulrich was injured during the October 10 game at Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The Associated Press and ABC News reported that he spent five days in the hospital before his death. He was a sophomore from Azle, Texas, playing for the university in Bethany, Oklahoma.
The athletics department's public announcement did not specify a cause of death. Reports differ in the medical detail they provide. This report does not assign a cause or infer one from the fact that he was injured during a game.
Saturday's game will not be played
Southern Nazarene's October 17 visit to Southwestern Oklahoma State has been canceled. SWOSU issued its announcement Thursday afternoon, and Southern Nazarene's football account separately confirmed it. The game had been scheduled for 2 p.m. at Flex-Chem Field in Weatherford.
SWOSU's current football schedule marks the game canceled. An earlier Thursday preview still describes a Saturday matchup, but that preview predates the cancellation and should not be used to plan attendance. The later announcement and current schedule are linked below.
