Brewers 7, Dodgers 4: Contreras answers, the bullpen closes the door
October 12 · Game 2 final
Updated
William Contreras erased one Dodgers lead, then created the Brewers' last one. His fifth-inning homer tied Game 2, and his sixth-inning RBI single put Milwaukee ahead to stay in a 7-4 win Monday at American Family Field. The Brewers lead the National League Championship Series 2-0.
Contreras went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. His first-inning single had already answered Los Angeles' opening run. Milwaukee finished with 12 hits to the Dodgers' three, but this was still a one-run game until the eighth. The Brewers had to keep answering before they could build a cushion.
Contreras supplies two answers
Christian Yelich's two-run single gave Milwaukee a 3-2 lead in the third. The rally included Jake Bauers' 12-pitch walk, which loaded the bases. Yoshinobu Yamamoto recorded eight outs before his removal. Two innings later, the Dodgers moved back in front, 4-3, on a throwing error during Tommy Edman's bunt and Freddie Freeman's sacrifice fly.
Contreras homered in the bottom of the fifth for 4-4. In the sixth, his single scored David Hamilton for 5-4. Brice Turang and Bauers added RBI singles in the eighth. That sequence gave Milwaukee four unanswered runs after Los Angeles had taken its last lead.
Fifteen outs without another baserunner
Dustin May, JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby recorded the final 15 outs against 15 batters, with seven strikeouts and no hits or walks. Freeman's fifth-inning sacrifice fly brought home a runner May inherited, so the fifth was not scoreless. Once that runner scored, the Dodgers never put another man aboard. Ashby recorded the final five outs, ending the game with a swinging strikeout of Miguel Rojas.
Milwaukee can win the pennant with two more victories. It has not won it yet. The series moves to Los Angeles for Game 3 on Wednesday, October 14, at 8 p.m. Eastern, with U.S. coverage on FS1, FOX Deportes and FOX One. A travel day gives both bullpens a break after the Brewers used four relievers in each of the first two games.
