Payton takes back Denver's play-calling. Webb remains on the staff.
October 8 · Play-calling announcement
Updated
Sean Payton is taking back the Broncos' offensive play-calling for Sunday's game against the Chargers. Denver announced the change Thursday. Davis Webb remains offensive coordinator, involved in game planning and on the sideline.
Denver is 2-2. Its team report ranks the offense 27th in scoring and total offense. Payton will communicate with Bo Nix through the quarterback's headset. He did not declare the arrangement permanent, limiting his answer to this week.
The handoff was never a complete separation
In February, Payton named Webb the primary caller while retaining involvement in the offense and the ability to call individual plays. That matters now: this is not an uninvolved head coach suddenly discovering an offense he had delegated entirely.
The February announcement presented the handoff as confidence in Webb's ability to help Denver win. It did not describe Payton as leaving offensive decisions behind. Thursday's reversal changes the game-day lead, not the fact that the head coach already shared responsibility.
A different caller still needs better execution
Our read: the next useful evidence is on the field. A new voice in the headset can alter sequencing, but it cannot by itself establish that protection, timing or finishing drives has improved. Those are questions for the game, not conclusions from the announcement.
Calling this a firing would misstate the news. Calling it a solution would get ahead of the result. Denver has changed who makes the calls. The offense still has to make them work.
