Tampa Bay's 17-point third quarter delivers its first win in Dallas
October 8 · Week 5 final
Updated
Tampa Bay finally has a win. The Buccaneers beat the Cowboys 24-16 at AT&T Stadium on Thursday, scoring 17 unanswered points in the third quarter after trailing 10-7 at halftime. Tampa Bay is 1-4; Dallas falls to 2-3.
Bucky Irving's 72-yard run opened the second-half surge. Emeka Egbuka followed with a 14-yard touchdown run. Later, a Jalon Daniels pass to Tez Johnson gained 64 yards and helped set up Irving's one-yard scoring run.
The quarter that changed the night
The offense had help between those scores. Yaya Diaby intercepted Dak Prescott, and Kevin Knowles recovered a kickoff-return fumble forced by Miles Killebrew. Chase McLaughlin's 41-yard field goal completed the third-quarter scoring.
That sequence explains the result more clearly than the final margin. Tampa Bay generated long gains, then turned Dallas mistakes into another scoring opportunity. The Cowboys went from a three-point lead to a 14-point deficit within one quarter.
A first win, with work still attached
Daniels started with Baker Mayfield ruled out. The win gives Tampa Bay something tangible from that assignment, but it does not establish when Mayfield will return or settle the quarterback's future role.
Our read: a team that began 0-4 needed a night like this, not a declaration that its problems had vanished. Tampa Bay can build on the explosive plays and takeaways while still reviewing the penalties and stalled possessions. Dallas has to account for a third quarter that undid its first-half lead.
