October 7 · Overtime final
Updated
Atlanta beat New York 101-98 in overtime Wednesday night and took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five WNBA semifinal. Regulation ended 88-88 before the Dream won the extra period 13-10.
Jordin Canada and Angel Reese scored 23 points each for Atlanta. Canada added eight assists, while Reese finished with seven rebounds. Breanna Stewart led New York with 35 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Jonquel Jones added 21 points and eight rebounds.
New York's shooting did not erase the turnovers
The Liberty shot 54.7 percent from the field and 48 percent from three-point range. Those numbers usually travel. Their ball security did not. New York committed 17 total turnovers, and Atlanta scored 28 points from them. The Dream committed nine total turnovers and allowed 10 points from them.
Atlanta also made 21 of 23 free throws. New York went 16-for-23. In a three-point overtime final, the possession and free-throw margins mattered more than the Liberty's shooting advantage.
The series moves to New York
Game 3 is Friday at 7:30 p.m. Eastern in New York. The Dream can reach the Finals with one more victory. The Liberty now have to win three straight games, beginning at home.
