Dylan Garand earned his first NHL shutout Friday, October 2, stopping all 22 Detroit shots as the New York Rangers beat the Red Wings 2-0. It was Garand's fourth NHL game, according to the league's official recap. The win moved New York to 2-1-0.

Sean Durzi put the Rangers ahead with a power-play goal at 5:12 of the first period, his first goal for the club. Another New York goal was overturned after an offside review. Detroit stayed within one until Eeli Tolvanen scored into an empty net at 18:44 of the third.

How New York built the lead

The scoreline was narrow for most of the night, but the Rangers protected the middle of the ice and allowed only two Red Wings shots in the third period. Garand handled the 22 that reached him. New York's official postgame notes also say the club has killed 10 consecutive penalties since its season opener.

That balance matters more than treating a shutout as one player's work alone. Garand supplied the saves, Durzi supplied an early advantage, and the skaters in front of the rookie limited Detroit's late opportunities while the game was still 1-0.

What the shutout says

The milestone follows Igor Shesterkin's franchise-first goalie goal in Thursday's win over Tampa Bay. They are different achievements in consecutive games, not evidence that New York's goaltending questions are settled after three games. Friday did show that the Rangers can win a low-scoring road game without needing another five-goal burst.
