The Giants lost the game—and now wait on Dart’s knee.

The Giants went to Los Angeles with a chance to start 2–0. They left 1–1 after a 28–6 loss to the Rams, a result overwhelmed by the image of Jaxson Dart walking to the locker room during the opening quarter.

Dart was hit as he delivered a third-down pass on New York’s first possession. The Giants initially listed him as questionable with a knee injury and later ruled him out. Jameis Winston took over. Dart had completed three of five passes for 20 yards before leaving.

The score was only part of the loss

New York never reached the end zone. Two field goals were the entire return from an offense that had scored 28 points against Dallas one week earlier. A poor night can be corrected on film. The availability of the starting quarterback cannot be treated that casually.

The responsible line on Dart is short: the injury is to his knee, his night ended in the first quarter, and no public diagnosis had been issued when this story was checked. Any timetable before the Giants release examination results would be guesswork.

Aaron Donald’s comeback supplied the other side of the night. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year had not played since the 2023 season before ending his retirement in August. Monday was his actual return to an NFL game, not a sideline appearance or an anniversary ceremony.

Donald’s return was not ceremonial

The Rams used him in a winning defensive effort, and their official highlights captured Donald making a tackle for a three-yard loss. One play does not answer how close a 35-year-old can come to his old standard after two full seasons away. It did answer the first question: he is back on the field, and opponents have to account for him again.

For the Giants, the next meaningful update will come from the medical evaluation, not from reading the replay frame by frame. Winston is the experienced contingency if Dart cannot play. The larger issue is whether New York’s promising opening-night offense can keep its shape without the quarterback who drove it.
