Updated

The Islanders’ September 19 camp report places Matthew Schaefer beside Adam Pelech, with Schaefer working on the right.

It is a combination to follow as camp moves toward games. One practice cannot settle an opening-night pairing, but it gives fans a specific experiment to watch: whether the coaches keep the two together and continue using Schaefer on that side.

Keep the injury timeline separate

Separately, the club’s September 17 management update left Mathew Barzal’s opening-night availability uncertain. This is not a newly announced September 19 injury.

Barzal’s progress needs to come from subsequent team updates, not assumptions drawn from a practice combination elsewhere on the ice. Returning to skating and being ready for a game are different steps. For now, the pairing is an experiment and his opening-night status remains unsettled.
