Jets · Week 4 brief
The Jets finally intercepted a pass. Chicago still controlled the game.
October 4 · Week 4 final
Updated
The Jets ended a conspicuous defensive drought in Chicago, but not their losing streak. Minkah Fitzpatrick intercepted Tyson Bagent in the second quarter, New York's first interception in 20 games. The Bears still won 23-12 on Sunday. The Jets fell to 1-3, while Chicago improved to 3-1.
The turnover mattered and should not be reduced to a footnote. New York also forced a fumble. But those stops could not offset an offense that managed 157 total yards and went 0-for-7 on third down, according to the NFL's Week 4 account. Chicago ran 89 plays to the Jets' 32 and gained 492 yards. A single interception cannot make that possession gap vanish.
The good defensive play and the wider loss
The Bears' ground game was the persistent problem: Kyle Monangai and D'Andre Swift combined for 204 rushing yards. Geno Smith's 58-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Williams brought New York to 23-12 late, but it was not the start of a sustained comeback. The Jets can take the long-awaited interception into next week. They still need an offense that stays on the field long enough to make defensive takeaways decisive.
