Why LeBron chose Philadelphia: Maxey's bond, Brown's arrival and Embiid's unfinished goal

LeBron James joined the Philadelphia 76ers in July. On the September 25 season premiere of his Mind the Game podcast, he gave a fuller explanation of why. His friendship with Tyrese Maxey, the unexpected addition of Jaylen Brown and the chance to help Joel Embiid pursue his first NBA championship all figured in the decision.

The distinction in timing matters. Philadelphia did not sign James today. What is new is his account of how a destination that had not been an obvious choice became the one he picked for the next stage of his career.

Maxey was the personal connection. James described a relationship with the guard that extends beyond basketball. That bond did not, on its own, make Philadelphia the plan. Brown's arrival from Boston changed the roster James was evaluating and made the Sixers a more compelling basketball option.

Three reasons, one decision

James also pointed to Embiid's unfinished pursuit of an NBA title. The former league MVP has accomplished a great deal individually but has not won a championship. James presented helping him reach that goal as a major part of Philadelphia's appeal, alongside his own desire to compete for another ring.

Those explanations tell us what James valued; they are not proof of what the season will deliver. The Sixers enter 2026-27 with James, Brown, Maxey, Embiid and VJ Edgecombe as their central names. An NBA season preview notes that Philadelphia went 45-37 last season and lost in the conference semifinals. The roster has changed substantially since then.

The most interesting fit question is not whether Philadelphia has enough scoring. Maxey and Brown can create shots, and Embiid commands defensive attention. James can organize possessions and find teammates in areas where they are most effective. How he shares late-game decisions with Maxey, and how the group functions when all its stars play together, will have to be demonstrated rather than declared.

The answer on the court is still ahead

Embiid's availability remains another practical limit on projections. James explained why he chose to join him. Neither a close friendship nor a deep roster can guarantee a healthy postseason or a championship. For now, the podcast gives a clearer answer to the summer's question of why Philadelphia. The season will answer whether the reasons translate into wins.
