Roman Anthony is not in Boston's posted starting lineup for Game 2 of its American League Wild Card Series against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, September 30. The 8 p.m. Eastern game comes one night after Anthony exited the series opener with right hand discomfort.

The Yankees won that opener 9-0 behind Cam Schlittler's scoreless start and Ben Rice's six-RBI night. Boston now needs a win to force a deciding third game. Anthony's absence is therefore more than an ordinary lineup change, although the club's medical assessment should guide any account of how long he might be unavailable.

MLB's pregame lineup lists Jahmai Jones as Boston's designated hitter and leadoff batter. Adley Rutschman, Willson Contreras and Wilyer Abreu follow in the order. Anthony is not listed among the starters in MLB's Game 2 feed.

Boston's altered lineup

Sonny Gray is listed as Boston's starting pitcher opposite Max Fried for New York. The pitching matchup raises the immediate stakes for both lineups: the Red Sox need offense after being shut out in Game 1, while the Yankees can end the series with another win.

Anthony's Game 1 exit and Game 2 omission are confirmed. They do not, by themselves, establish a recovery timetable or what his availability would be in a later round. Boston's subsequent roster and injury updates will determine that.

The Yankees lead the best-of-three series 1-0. Game 2 is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern at Yankee Stadium, with the outcome still pending at publication. This report is a pregame availability update, not a game result.
