Rutgers 3, No. 18 Michigan 2, OT: Cogdell finishes a ranked win backed by a 20-8 shot edge
October 16, 2026 · Rutgers 3, No. 18 Michigan 2, OT
Anna Cogdell scored in the final seconds of overtime to give Rutgers a 3-2 home win over No. 18 Michigan on Friday. Her second goal of the game completed a comeback from two separate one-goal deficits. For the Scarlet Knights, it was a third consecutive victory and a second win over a ranked opponent this season.
The attempt count supports the result
Rutgers finished ahead 20-8 in total shots, 12-4 in shots on target and 7-3 in penalty corners. Those are three separate measures, not interchangeable proof of possession or expected goals. Together, though, they show that the winning chance did not arrive at the end of an otherwise empty attacking night.
The decisive play came from a late corner. Rutgers' account describes Julia Viñas Nieto feeding Cogdell, whose winner was her sixth goal of the season. Viñas Nieto finished with two assists. Talia Schenck supplied Rutgers' other goal before Cogdell equalized and then ended the game. The official recap and box score differ on some clock detail, so this report does not assign an exact number of seconds remaining to the winner.
Michigan's resistance is part of the story
Michigan's nine saves explain why the large shot difference did not become a comfortable margin. The Wolverines led twice, and their three overtime attempts exceeded Rutgers' two. That is the strongest check on reading the final as a one-sided game. Rutgers generated more attempts overall, but it still had to recover, defend overtime chances and finish under a narrowing clock.
The Scarlet Knights are now 8-6 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten. Michigan is 6-7 and 1-5. Rutgers next hosts Michigan State on Sunday, October 18, with Senior Day recognition planned after the game. Friday is a consequential ranked win, not a conference title, tournament berth or new poll position. The immediate task is to carry that attacking volume into the next home game without needing another late rescue.
