Rutgers scored 24 consecutive points after halftime to beat Maryland 37-30 in College Park on Saturday. A 23-13 deficit became a 37-23 lead before the Terrapins answered late. That sustained response, rather than one isolated rescue play, is what separates this road win from the first half that threatened to undo it.

The comeback had more than one route

Dylan Lonergan passed for a season-high 291 yards and three touchdowns. KJ Duff caught nine passes for 113 yards and two scores. Those two touchdowns helped keep Rutgers within reach before the break, even as a blocked extra point returned for two points contributed to Maryland's advantage. The Scarlet Knights entered halftime needing to repair a ten-point gap, not simply protect a close game.

Clay Thevenin gave the comeback a second dimension. He caught a 19-yard touchdown pass and ran for a seven-yard score, finishing with 109 rushing yards. Dane Pizzaro's field goal began the second-half scoring. Antwan Raymond later added the two-yard touchdown that completed Rutgers' 24-point run. The passes and rushing scores belong in the same account: Maryland could not protect its lead by stopping just one kind of finish.

Maryland still forced a final stop

The final margin also deserves its context. Maryland scored with 2:17 remaining and made Rutgers defend a one-possession game. The Scarlet Knights ultimately forced a turnover on downs to finish it. Calling the win comfortable would erase both the first-half deficit and the stop still required after the offense had built a cushion.

Rutgers has now beaten Maryland in three straight meetings. Saturday supplied a concrete recovery after the earlier loss to Indiana: production from the quarterback, a 100-yard rusher and an unanswered scoring stretch long enough to change the game. One result does not settle the season's wider problems. It does give Rutgers a road victory earned through several possessions, with Northwestern next on the official schedule for October 24.
