The Buffalo Sabres signed defenseman Louis Crevier to a four-year, $16 million extension on Thursday, October 1, hours before their season opener at Columbus. The deal carries a $4 million average annual value, begins in 2027-28 and runs through 2030-31, according to the NHL. Buffalo's transaction log confirms the extension.

Crevier, 25, arrived from Chicago in the June trade that sent Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway to the Blackhawks. He had seven goals and 18 assists in 78 games for Chicago last season. Those 25 points help explain Buffalo's investment, but the more immediate question is how he fits a defense group entering the opener with several injury-related lineup decisions.

The timing matters. Crevier was entering the final season of his previous contract and could have become a restricted free agent afterward. Buffalo has now fixed both his term and cap figure before seeing him play a regular-season game in its uniform. That is a commitment to the role the club expects him to fill, not proof that the role is already settled.

A commitment before the first game

The Sabres' opening-night preview says Crevier is slated for his team debut and practiced Wednesday alongside Owen Power. Coach Lindy Ruff praised his preseason defending and puck decisions. A practice pairing and a coach's assessment are useful clues, though neither establishes what the pair will deliver over a full season.

Buffalo opens at the Blue Jackets at 7 p.m. Eastern on Thursday. The Sabres list MSG for their broadcast market, DAZN for in-market streaming and ESPN+ out of market. The opener offers a first regular-season look at the new defenseman. It cannot answer the four-year question in one night.
