Senators 4, Devils 1: Ullmark turns 30 shots into one goal
October 12 · Final
Updated
Thirty shots produced one goal for the Devils. Linus Ullmark stopped 29 of them, and Ottawa beat New Jersey 4-1 Monday at Prudential Center. The Senators built a 3-0 lead before Arseny Gritsyuk supplied the Devils' only answer with 5:01 remaining. Tyler Kleven's empty-net goal settled the final margin.
New Jersey outshot Ottawa 30-20. That edge is worth noting, but it cannot stand in for a claim that the Devils controlled every important chance. Ottawa's goals arrived before New Jersey found a way past Ullmark. The original comparison alongside this report separates shot volume from the scoring sequence.
Nine seconds change the night
The first period ended scoreless. Shane Pinto changed that nine seconds into the second, finishing a play assisted by Michael Amadio and Claude Giroux. Stephen Halliday doubled the lead on the power play at 8:40 of the period, with Tim Stützle and Dylan Cozens credited with assists.
Stützle made it 3-0 at 11:10 of the third, adding a goal to his earlier assist. Gritsyuk scored at 14:59, assisted by Jack Hughes. New Jersey finally had a goal, but little time to turn it into a comeback. Kleven scored into the empty net at 17:53.
A late answer, then straight to Detroit
Nico Daws allowed three goals on 19 shots and made 16 saves. The fourth Ottawa goal belongs in the team score, not his goals-against line. Ullmark's 29 saves were the more consequential figure: New Jersey's shot advantage never became a lead or even a tie after Pinto scored.
The Devils have no recovery day on the schedule. Their next game is Tuesday, October 13, at Detroit, with a 6 p.m. Eastern start listed by the NHL. The usable takeaway is narrow: keep producing opportunities, but turn that volume into an earlier answer. One late goal cannot rescue a three-goal deficit by itself.
