Washington Spirit 1, Gotham FC 0, final October 17. Washington appears first: possession 37% to 63%, shots 13 to 5, shots on goal 6 to 2. More Gotham possession did not produce more attempts.
Original final comparison from the NWSL match record, checked October 17. Washington is first in every pair. Possession and shot counts measure different parts of the match.

Lucia Di Guglielmo scored in the 70th minute as Washington beat Gotham 1-0 at Audi Field on Saturday. Gotham had 63% of possession, but Washington finished ahead 13-5 in shots and 6-2 in shots on goal. The losing side had more of the ball. The winning side made the goalkeepers deal with more attempts.

More ball, fewer attempts

The contrast is the useful starting point for this result. Possession measures control of the ball, not the quality or frequency of the chances that follow. Gotham's two shots on target gave Washington goalkeeper Sandy MacIver far less work than Ann-Katrin Berger faced at the other end. Berger made five saves, while MacIver made two. Neither the possession share nor the narrow score should hide that difference.

Gotham's account describes Di Guglielmo reaching a deflected cross and finishing past the advancing Berger. That was enough to decide a match scoreless at halftime. There is a fair limit to the statistical argument: shot totals are not a complete measure of chance quality, and a one-goal game leaves little room between a defeat and a draw. They do, however, challenge any suggestion that keeping the ball alone made Gotham the more threatening team.

The missed clinch is not a lost quarterfinal

The defeat also stopped the Saturday clinching combination before its first condition. Gotham's announced path to a top-two finish and home-field advantage through the semifinals required a win. The Shield scenario required that victory plus a San Diego loss. Neither combination was satisfied by this result. That does not undo the home quarterfinal Gotham had already secured with its October 4 draw against Angel City.

Gotham remained on 55 points after the match. Its final two regular-season opponents are Orlando away on October 25 and Utah at home on November 1. Those fixtures now carry the remaining work in the Shield race. Saturday's result is a missed chance to settle more of that work early, not evidence that the regular-season trophy or playoff run has already been decided.
