Washington beat New York 3-1 on Friday, ending the Rangers' four-game winning streak. Boone Jenner scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period. Igor Shesterkin's departure earlier in that period made the night about more than two standings points.

Shesterkin left with a lower-body injury and did not return. Field Level Media reported that he was helped off after an apparent awkward movement against the post in a 1-1 game. Dylan Garand replaced him. That description is not a medical diagnosis.

What is known about Shesterkin

NHL.com reported no postgame condition update from Mike Sullivan. No return timetable is verified. The next useful information is a team availability update, not an interpretation of how the injury looked.

The official NHL scoring record shows Alexis Lafreniere giving New York the lead on a power-play goal at 10:17 of the first period. Timothy Liljegren tied the game at 6:08 of the second. Jenner's unassisted goal at 17:38 put Washington ahead, and Tom Wilson added an empty-net goal at 19:59 of the third.

Washington took the second period

Washington outshot New York 27-22 overall and 12-8 in the second period. The Rangers scored once on three power plays; the Capitals went 0-for-3. New York's special teams kept the game within reach, but it produced no goal after the first period.

The period-by-period scoring tells a simpler story than the 3-1 final alone: New York won the first 1-0, Washington won the second 2-0, and the final goal came into an empty net. Jenner's second-period goal, not Wilson's last-second finish, created the lead that decided the game.

Keep the result separate from the prognosis

Our read: the Rangers have two separate things to address. They did not find another goal after Lafreniere's opener, and their goaltending plan now depends on information that is not yet public. Neither problem should be reduced to an instant diagnosis or a trade prescription.

The four-game streak is over. The injury story remains open. Until the Rangers provide a fuller update, the responsible distinction is a confirmed game exit and an unverified future absence.
