NHL · Major injury update
Shesterkin to miss the rest of the season. The Rangers' goaltending plan changes now.
October 10 update · October 9 injury
Igor Shesterkin will miss the rest of the 2026-27 season with a lower-body injury, SNY reported Saturday, citing confirmation from the Rangers. The update turns Friday's game exit into a season-long absence for New York's starting goaltender.
SNY's John Flanigan published the report at 12:31 p.m. Eastern. Elliotte Friedman had posted seven minutes earlier that Shesterkin was out for the year. SNY's explicit season wording matters: this is not merely a return date somewhere beyond December. The sources checked here do not establish a specific diagnosis or surgery.
Garand inherits the immediate problem
The immediate complication is that the other veteran option is not ready either. SNY reports Joonas Korpisalo is expected to remain on injured reserve for at least four more weeks. Friedman separately reported another four weeks for Korpisalo. Dylan Garand replaced Shesterkin in Friday's loss to Washington and now faces a much larger role.
That is the practical difference between losing a starter for one night and losing him for the season. A backup can finish a game without being asked to carry the next several months. New York now has to allocate starts, protect against another absence and decide what support Garand needs. Those are roster questions, not evidence that a particular trade is coming.
An absence is confirmed. A replacement is not.
Our read: the Rangers should not confuse urgency with a mandate to make the biggest available move. Garand's opportunity and the need for reliable depth can both be real. Any external addition has to make sense beyond the first reaction to this news. No replacement acquisition is announced in the sources cited here, and no amount of public speculation settles its price or availability.
Friday's Capitals 3, Rangers 1 result is already on the record. Saturday changes what comes after it. The useful next information is the Rangers' actual goaltending plan, verified recalls or transactions, and any fuller medical statement. We will not turn an injury description into a diagnosis or treat losing Shesterkin as proof that the rest of the team cannot compete.
