Twenty-one strikeouts. Six other outs. Cleveland won 2-0 on Saturday night, ending Chicago's season and completing a comeback from an 0-2 American League Division Series deficit. The Guardians won the last three games and now face Tampa Bay in the AL Championship Series.
Gavin Williams struck out 12 in 5⅔ scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks. José Ramírez hit a two-run homer off Sean Burke in the fourth, with Steven Kwan aboard. Those were the game's only runs. Cleveland did not need a late offensive surge because Chicago never scored.
The final pitching line makes the scale plain: 21 strikeouts across 27 outs, or 77.8% of Cleveland's outs. That is a share of outs, not a strikeout rate calculated from batters faced. Williams supplied 12. The three relievers supplied the other nine.
The bullpen supplied nine more strikeouts
Erik Sabrowski entered with the bases loaded in the sixth and struck out Munetaka Murakami on a foul tip to end the inning. His one out mattered as much as the larger totals around it. A hit there could have changed a two-run game. Instead, all three inherited runners stayed off the scoreboard.
Hunter Gaddis struck out four in 1⅓ innings. Cade Smith added four in 1⅔ and earned the save. The bullpen allowed two hits and no walks in its combined 3⅓ innings. Chicago finished with three hits, two walks and six runners left on base.
Our read: the strikeout total explains the dominance, but Sabrowski's escape explains why it held. Cleveland protected a narrow lead through the one moment that threatened to undo it. The bullpen did not merely finish Williams' work. It preserved the game at its most vulnerable point.
The next assignment is Tampa Bay. Game 1 is Monday, October 12, at Tropicana Field. This result settles the matchup, not the ALCS. Cleveland has earned another series, and its last three wins show how completely an 0-2 deficit can be overturned.
