Kelsey Mitchell put a new number at the top of the WNBA’s single-season scoring list on September 18. Indiana’s guard scored 33 in a 103–85 road victory over Toronto, reaching 1,034 points for the season, according to the Associated Press.

The record fell on a third-quarter three-pointer, the AP reports. Mitchell passed A’ja Wilson’s 1,021 points from 2024. There was still a game to win, and Indiana had not yet put Toronto away.

The record is a total—not an average

This is a record for total points in a season. Comparing scoring rates across years requires games played and minutes as well. Mitchell’s place at the top measures how much she has produced over the season, without settling every comparison with the scorers who came before her.

Sustaining that production is an achievement in its own right. It also makes a stronger story than trying to turn the milestone immediately into an MVP verdict. The award debate can account for the rest of her season; this night has its own place in the record book.

The game still needed a finish

Field Level Media’s recap credits Mitchell with seven three-pointers and Caitlin Clark with 28 points and 14 assists. Indiana led by six entering the fourth quarter and closed the game on a 20–7 run. The Fever improved to 27–14 with a third consecutive victory; Toronto fell to 11–30.

An 18-point final margin can hide a competitive game. Indiana took a six-point lead into the fourth quarter before pulling clear. The record-breaking shot will get the attention, but the late run belongs in any account of how the Fever won.

A national story, with playoff relevance

Liberty followers have reason to keep an eye on that finish. Indiana had won three straight and was getting substantial production from both Mitchell and Clark. That does not determine a postseason matchup. It does make the Fever worth watching beyond the record celebration.
