Three separate Maryland coaching statuses on October 21: Locksley's departure is immediate; Abdul-Rahim is interim head coach; the permanent appointment remains a national search. Source: Maryland Athletics, checked October 21, 2026.
An interim appointment and a permanent search are different decisions. Maryland has announced the first, not the result of the second.

Maryland and Michael Locksley have mutually agreed to part ways, with his departure as head football coach effective immediately, the university announced Wednesday. Aazaar Abdul-Rahim will lead the team on an interim basis while Maryland begins a national search.

The change comes four days after Rutgers won 37-30 in College Park. Maryland led 23-13 at halftime before the Scarlet Knights scored 24 consecutive points. The result left the Terrapins 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten. It is relevant context, not evidence that one loss alone determined Wednesday's decision.

Maryland lists Locksley's record at 39-54 in his eighth season as head coach. His teams won three consecutive bowl games from 2021 through 2023. Those successes are part of the record too. A fair assessment should not erase them to make the ending seem inevitable.

Abdul-Rahim has served as co-defensive coordinator, associate head coach for defense and cornerbacks coach during his current Maryland stint. The school identifies him as the interim head coach, not the permanent successor. Its statement says a comprehensive national search will begin immediately.

Athletic director Jim Smith described the move as a mutual decision after discussions with Locksley. The university also said it would support the players and staff during the transition. The announcement does not disclose a financial settlement or name a preferred permanent candidate.

Our view: the immediate responsibility is less glamorous than the search. An interim staff has to organize the remaining season while players face uncertainty around them. The next hire will be judged against expectations of improvement, but a search announcement is not yet a plan readers can evaluate. Maryland has changed the person in charge. The evidence for what comes next still has to arrive.
