Six teams are in. The last week still has four real races.

The 2026 playoff field is half full. Tampa Bay, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, the Yankees, Atlanta and Boston have clinched postseason places. Six openings remain, and the final week still has enough uncertainty to change several October routes.

For New York, the important distinction is between qualification and position. The Yankees clinched on September 14 and entered Monday holding the American League's top Wild Card place. Tampa Bay still led the AL East by six games, with four head-to-head games beginning Tuesday in the Bronx.

Boston became the sixth confirmed postseason club Sunday even after losing 5–1 to Tampa Bay. Houston's 4–2 loss to Atlanta supplied the result the Red Sox needed. A Yankees–Red Sox Wild Card Series is possible, not official; seeding can still move before the regular season ends September 27.

Boston completes the comeback

The turnaround deserves its own line. Boston was 32–46 before producing a 32–5 stretch from June 25 through August 7, according to MLB's club report. A season that looked lost in June is now guaranteed to reach October.

Atlanta's victory did two jobs. Mike Yastrzemski's three-run homer helped the Braves finish a sweep in Houston, and the 4–2 win secured their seventh NL East title in nine seasons.

Atlanta owns the East

That result closes the Mets' division race. It does not erase the wider National League finish: the Cubs and Padres entered Monday tied for the first two Wild Card positions, with Philadelphia one game behind them.

The American League still has three pressure points. Texas led Houston by one game in the West. Cleveland led the White Sox by one in the Central. Chicago held a three-game advantage over Toronto and Houston for the final Wild Card.

The races that remain

Ties do not produce a Game 163. MLB has used mathematical tiebreakers since 2022, beginning with head-to-head results. That makes the last week more than a scoreboard watch; it is also a race through a set of tiebreakers already earned or lost.

The Wild Card Series begin September 29. Until the bracket is fixed, the cleanest reading is simple: the Yankees have their place, Boston has completed an improbable recovery, Atlanta owns the NL East, and four races can still rearrange the first week of October.
