The Yankees have four games to keep the AL East alive. Two come today.

The Yankees do not need a complicated scoreboard exercise Tuesday. They need to beat Tampa Bay twice, then do it twice more. One Rays victory in this four-game series clinches the American League East for Tampa Bay. A Yankees sweep is the only result that keeps the division race alive.

Both clubs have already secured postseason places. That removes one kind of pressure and sharpens another. Tampa Bay enters the day 95–60 with a six-game lead; New York is 89–66. The Yankees are not fighting merely to extend their season. They are fighting to change the route they will have to take through October.

The arithmetic is unforgiving

The standings make the assignment look almost impossible because it nearly is. New York's elimination number is two, and the Rays control the clincher directly. There is no help to request from another opponent this week. The Yankees have to do the work themselves.

That begins with a split-admission doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. Carlos Rodón is scheduled to oppose Nick Martinez in the 1:05 p.m. opener. Max Fried is scheduled against Drew Rasmussen at 7:05 p.m. The series continues Wednesday and Thursday, with Cam Schlittler scheduled for the finale.

Tuesday's first game replaces the May 23 meeting that was postponed. Tickets from that date are valid only for the 1:05 game, according to MLB's postponement notice. The night game requires a separate ticket. That distinction matters to anyone planning to attend rather than simply follow the scores.

Two games, two separate tickets

The Yankees arrive without Aaron Judge, who is on the injured list with a right calf strain. MLB's series preview put a number on the difference: New York was 41–25 with Judge in the lineup and 48–41 without him when the preview was published. No single split explains a season, but this is not an ordinary absence with the division on the line.

Ben Rice supplies one of the lineup's clearest sources of force. He enters the series with 39 home runs, one short of 40. The milestone would be worth celebrating. The more urgent need is less decorative: productive at-bats across four games against the club the Yankees must catch.

If Tampa Bay wins once, the Yankees move forward as a Wild Card team. That is not a failed season, and it is not a hopeless October position. It is simply a harder road than winning the division can provide.

The division is not the only October issue

The cleanest way to describe Tuesday is also the most demanding. The Yankees have two games today and no margin for losing either one. At 1:05, the last serious attempt to take the AL East begins. By the end of the night, it may already be over—or it may finally feel like a race again.
