The Yankees delayed the party. The Rays held it anyway.

The Yankees did the hard part first. Carlos Rodón gave them eight scoreless innings in Tuesday's doubleheader opener, and a 2-0 win kept Tampa Bay from clinching the American League East that afternoon. Several hours later, the math stopped being negotiable.

The Rays took the nightcap 6-1 at Yankee Stadium and won their first division title since 2021. New York finished the day with a split, not the four-game sweep it needed to catch Tampa Bay. The division race is over with two games still left between the clubs.

The opener was not meaningless because the second game went badly. Rodón's performance gave the Yankees a chance to force another day of pressure. It also showed that a short October series can turn on one starting pitcher commanding a game. New York will need that version of its rotation soon.

One afternoon of hope

Cody Bellinger's two-run home run supplied all of the afternoon's scoring. The Yankees' staff held Tampa Bay to three hits, according to MLB's official score. For a few hours, the Rays had to wait.

Drew Rasmussen made the wait brief. He carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning of Game 2, struck out 11 and left New York chasing the game rather than the division. The Yankees finished with three hits. Their lone run came on George Lombard Jr.'s seventh-inning single after Heliot Ramos broke up the no-hit bid.

Yandy Díaz drove in four of Tampa Bay's six runs with two two-run singles. This was not a late technicality in the standings. The Rays beat the team pursuing them, on its own field, to secure the title.

What changed at night

There is a distinction worth keeping in view. New York did not lose its postseason place Tuesday night. The Yankees had already clinched a berth, and MLB says they have now clinched home-field advantage for the American League Wild Card Series. Game 1 is scheduled for September 29. Their opponent is not yet final.

The Yankees may see the Rays again if they advance. MLB's current bracket would send the Wild Card winner to Tampa Bay for the Division Series beginning October 3. That possibility gives the final two regular-season meetings a different purpose. They cannot reclaim the East, but they can test an approach against a potential October opponent.

New York still has a real October assignment, not a consolation prize. Home field for a best-of-three series matters. So does the question left by Tuesday's contrast: can the lineup that had one productive swing in the opener and only three hits at night give its pitchers enough room when the games become elimination games?

The road New York still controls

The Rays earned the division over a full season. The Yankees' next opportunity is shorter and less forgiving. They can no longer change the standings at the top of the AL East. They can change what this loss means by what they do starting September 29.
