Wilfredo Gómez, the Puerto Rican champion whose power made super-bantamweight boxing history, has died at 69. The World Boxing Council confirmed his death in an October 10 statement. EFE's October 11 report also cites confirmation from his son, Wilfredo Gómez Jr., and places the death on Saturday night.

Gómez's defining number is 17: consecutive defenses of his super-bantamweight world title, all ending by knockout. The WBC identifies that run as a historic record. EFE records world championships in three divisions: super bantamweight, featherweight and super featherweight. Both sources identify him as an International Boxing Hall of Fame member.

That defense streak captures sustained excellence, not one spectacular night. Opponents kept coming for the title, and Gómez repeatedly finished the contest himself. It remains central to his place in Puerto Rican boxing history.

Funeral details remain pending in the sources checked. We are not asserting a cause of death or drawing a medical conclusion from reports of his recent hospitalization. Condolences to his family and the boxing community.
