Original Jets defensive-production card. Eight sacks explain how New York stayed close enough for the late special-teams opening. Official Jets and Giants sources checked October 11 Eastern.

Braelon Allen turned Cleveland's bad punt snap into the touchdown the Jets needed. His 22-yard third-down run with three minutes remaining delivered a 17-12 victory Sunday at MetLife Stadium. The Giants' afternoon ended differently: a 27-27 overtime tie at Washington after a fourth-quarter comeback and two squandered chances in the extra period.

The Jets recovered the errant snap at Cleveland's 23. Allen finished with 116 rushing yards. David Bailey supplied three of New York's eight sacks, and the defense held Cleveland below 200 yards. That pressure kept a faltering offense within reach: after an opening-drive touchdown, the Jets punted on their other four first-half possessions. They are 2-3, with the three-game losing streak over.

Our read: the run was the finish, but the defense made the rescue possible. A short field becomes decisive only when the score remains close. Eight sacks and repeated stops left the Jets one workable possession from a win despite their stalled drives.

The Giants trailed 27-13 with 11:05 left. Jameis Winston's third touchdown pass, a 17-yard throw to Malik Nabers with 1:43 remaining, brought them level. Winston finished with 326 passing yards. In overtime, Dominic Zvada missed from 46 yards. A later drive reached Washington's 24 before Daron Payne forced Cam Skattebo's fumble and Shy Tuttle recovered.

Washington then reached the Giants' 24 but ran out of time without attempting the potential winning field goal. The comeback preserved a share of the result; it did not deliver a victory. The Giants are 3-1-1 and remain atop the NFC East. Finishing drives, rather than creating another late escape, is the lesson from this one.

Next Sunday, October 18, the Jets visit New England and the Giants host New Orleans. Both games are scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern. Sunday's final results are settled. Next week's outcome is not.
